Tiny Alis Travels

Tuesday, 29 July 2014

So. After about 3 months of silence on here, I thought it might be time to give a little update on what's been going on. I decided to have a small break from blogging while I was finishing my exams at university, but unfortunately I've had a few bad surprises over the summer, and it's been pretty rough going. I'm not going to sit here and dwell on that though since I have way more exciting things coming up!

In a matter of days, I'll be moving to America. To live and study. For a year! I'm going to be living in Maine and studying at their university as part of my course. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to set up a travels blog, which for someone like me who is pretty unadventurous, is a pretty big step. If you love to read about road trips and travelling around, or if you are interested in the idea of studying abroad then hopefully you'll enjoy reading it! It's not got too much to offer right now in terms of posts, but with a road trip through New York, Boston and other places before I settle in at uni planned, there is bound to be some pretty interesting posts coming up.

As for Tiny Alis, I'll try to keep posting but for the next few weeks life is looking pretty manic so after I settle in America maybe I can branch out into their beauty world! Thank you for the patience guys, it's appreciated.

You can follow Tiny Alis Travels on Bloglovin to stay updated!

Brown Tortoise Shell Retro Sunglasses - River Island - £10
A few years ago, I went through a stage where I owned about 12 pairs of sunglasses that I had on rotation throughout the summer. A couple of years and move to uni later, this collection was drastically streamlined and I stuck to one pair of H&M beauties since. However when this summer arrived, I found that they had cracked all around the frame and were a bit unwearable, which led me on the hunt for a replacement pair.

Countless online searches later found me this little pair which I have been loving since I got them for my birthday! I have a pretty small face, which is pretty much a perfect sphere so big oversized glasses don't really suit me, so I stuck to the simple wayfarer design and the tortoise shell brown I was already used to. I can see these lasting for many summers to come, and hopefully, if this weekend's weather is anything to go by, they will get a lot of use over the next couple of months as well!

What sunglasses are you rocking this summer?

Rita Ora for Rimmel Nail Polishes

Monday, 12 May 2014

Rita Ora for Rimmel - L to R: Breakfast in Bed; Lose Your Lingerie; Pillow Talk.
Rita Ora is the most recent addition to Rimmel's celebrity ranks, joining Kate Moss. The songstress has collaborated with Rimmel to release a number of lip crayons and 60 second nail polishes, in some great shades. Admittedly I've not tried the lip crayons - I don't know how many more lip crayon releases I can take - but some of the nail polishes really caught my eye.

The Style Update #1

Wednesday, 7 May 2014

I don't very often post about style on Tiny Alis these days, (I think my last Fashion themed post was last summer) but recently I've been feeling a bit of a style overhaul coming on, and purchasing a few things here and there to give my wardrobe a bit of an update. Now I won't be delving into the world of outfit photos again anytime soon - I just don't have the space - but I may post key pieces every now and then to show you what sort of thing I've been investing in.

The Guide: Applying Fake Tan

Sunday, 27 April 2014

A few weeks ago, I had been trialling a fake tan for the blog, and a reader asked me for a guide on applying fake tan in general. I will say now, I'm really no expert and the few tips I do know I have picked up in the same way that everyone does when they are experimenting. I've managed to cut it into a few steps for you all, but it really is about finding what works best for you.

Made Up: Pretending I'm from Paris

Wednesday, 23 April 2014

One of my main inspirations for finally chopping off all my hair was the women of Paris. I kept seeing so many Parisian street looks, with short cropped bobs, and I fell in love. Since the big chop, I've been trying to channel a more Parisian make up look, which to me is a fresh complexion, big eyes, and a nice bold lip.

For the skin, I used No 7 Essentially Natural Foundation in Calico - my go to foundation at the moment - and brightened under the eyes with L'Oreal Lumi Magique Concealer in Light. I contoured ever so slightly, to add a bit of warmth to the face, with The Body Shop Honey Bronzer, and used my favourite blush of the moment, the No 7 Pop & Glow in Mango Sorbet. Finally I dabbed a tiny bit of Seventeen Wow! Skin 3 Way Highlighter on the top of my cheeks - review coming on Friday...

For brows, I used the Sleek Eyebrow Stylist in Light, which I am loving right now. I added Rimmel Scandaleyes Shadow Stick in Taupe to the eyes and blended it out, before adding the L'Oreal Superliner Perfect Slim Black Intense (mouthful or what?) in a neat cat eye flick. I went back to my trusty Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara, which is starting to dry out a bit so a new one may be finding itself in my shopping basket soon. Finally, on the lips, I applied Topshop Lipstick in Ohh La La, which is a gorgeous coral shade, and is fast becoming my favourite spring shade.

Strangers Coffee House

Sunday, 30 March 2014

The other day, the weather was pretty beautiful where I live in Norwich, so my housemate and I went out for a spontaneous lunch. Norwich has so many great, independent cafes and shops in the city, which I love. You can find really individual places. We went to a place called Strangers Coffee House which was super cute. We both had some really nice sandwiches, my housemate opted for a coffee and I went for a green tea since I'm trying to get back into eating a lot healthier. We also picked up a couple of things to satisfy our sweet tooths from a little cafe nearby called Biddy's Tea Room, I went with the Mint Chocolate Cupcake. If you ever get the chance to come up to Norwich, I really recommend a lot of the places along the Lower Goat Lane area, and I think I'm going to be doing a few more lifestyle posts about these places for the next few weeks if you are interested!

Made Up: For The Gym

Wednesday, 26 March 2014

Top to Bottom: No 7 Stay Perfect Mascara; Maybelline Brow Drama in Medium Brown; L'Oreal Lumi Magique Concealer in Light; Rimmel Scandaleyes Eyeliner in Bronze; Revlon Colour Burst Lip Butter in Juicy Papaya.
Taking a slightly different approach to this week's Made Up post, in lieu of Sunday's fitness post, I thought I'd focus more on my saviour products when it comes to frequenting the gym. You know how it goes, you go to the gym bare faced, come out looking like a sweaty, hot mess and then have somewhere to be where you need to look fairly presentable, and fast. The gym I go to is actually my uni gym, so fitting in a workout between lectures is a fairly common thing for me, but I hate looking like a shambles afterwards, so with the bare minimum of products, all in stick form so that I can save space, I attempt to throw together a look.

First and foremost, I skip the base, mainly because I don't suffer with too bad skin anyway, and I find after a workout and a face wash, my skin is normally at its best. Don't ask me about the science behind it, I'm no expert, but I just find it looks a bit more radiant that usual. It is also one of the few times when my deathly pale skin does not require a pop of colour to the cheeks, so base wise I just stick to an illuminating concealer. I love the L'Oreal Lumi Magique for this, it's one of the best illuminating concealers that the high street has to offer. (If you feel like you need that extra pop of colour No 7's new Pop and Glow Sticks are awesome, and if you want a bit more of a base the Maybelline Fit Me Foundation Stick may be right up your street.) Next up, I tame the brows with the Maybelline Brow Drama Gel. It's a great way to quickly look a bit more presentable by combing through the flyaway hairs. Eye wise I stick to a quick bronzed look in the form of Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Bronze, which I apply to the lid and blend out with my finger, and then apply the No 7 Stay Perfect Mascara to my lashes. These are both waterproof so they'll be sticking around regardless of whether you are still feeling a little sweaty or not (I'm hoping not). Finally just a quick slick of lip balm in the form of Revlon Colour Burst Lip Butter in Juicy Papaya, a gorgeous sheer coral shade which really brightens up the face!

What do you throw on after the gym?

Spring Nails

Monday, 17 March 2014

L to R: Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Nail Paint in Lychee; Essie in Fiji; Topshop Nails in Parma Violet; Rimmel 60 Seconds in Little Bo Peep; Topshop Nails in World's End; Bourjois One Second Gel Nail Polish in Pom.
Spring is rolling around and the typical pastel nail shades are rearing their heads again, however, the My Little Pony pastels have grown up slightly in favour of more neutral pastels. However, you can't tear me away from some of my yearly favourites so I have left them in too.

A Weekend At The Beach

Sunday, 16 March 2014

Recently I headed down to Bournemouth again to see the boyfriend, and I know I did a lifestyle post on it before Christmas, but it is definitely one of those places that comes alive in the sun. Prepare yourself for a very photo heavy post featuring the beach, cheeky Space NK purchases, Harry Ramsden's Fish and Chips, some incredibly tasty breakfasts and the sun!

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Intense Elixir

Monday, 10 March 2014

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Intense Elixir - £15.99*
I have had a pretty interesting history with fake tan. Being pretty darn pale, fake tan has been a small necessity at times and I have done the rounds when it comes to the drugstores offerings. I'm talking moisturisers, gels, mousses, you name it, I've probably tried it. I found my favourite in the Rimmel Sun Shimmer Instant Fake Tan (matte edition of course), but when I was sent this I was keen to see how a long lasting fake tan would suit me up against Rimmel's instant tan offering, especially since they are rebranding that range right now and I can see it being faded out of stores...

Springtime Staples

Vichy Idealia BB Cream, Stila Convertible Colour in Liium; Revlon Colour Burst Lacquer Balm in Demure, Revlon Colour Burst Matte Balm in Unapologetic; Revlon Colour Burst Lip Butter in Juicy Papaya; No 7 Eye Shadow; Soap & Glory Glow All Out
With all the sunshine that’s been about lately, I feel like spring has definitely sprung, and with that I’ve been rotating my make up and beauty stash to include a few more seasonally appropriate items. I’ve gone and split this up into two posts, with my make up bits being featured today and my spring nail picks coming up in a few days.

The first thing I find an essential in spring is a dewy, glowing complexion. I normally go for a few illuminating products from day to day anyway, but when spring comes around, I up the glow a tiny bit more. A great base for this is the Vichy Idealia BB Cream - I have the lighter shade - this stuff packs a pretty great illuminating punch. Not too over the top or in your face, this is the perfect foundation to spring make up.

I’m a fan of cream blushes all year round to be honest, but when the sun starts coming out a bit more I leave the cream to powder formulas to the side for a bit and opt for wetter cream formulas. The Stila Convertible Colours are a fab example of this, but another great choice would be Max Factor’s Cream Blush. I like a bit of a highlight on the top of my cheekbones as well, and the Soap & Glory Glow All Out powder leaves a really nice, subtle glow to the higher points of the face.

For eyes, I tend to go a bit more delicate when spring rolls around. I try to veer away from the heavy black liner and go for sweet pastel colours. I love this lilac shadow from No 7 because the purple works well with my eye colour, but it’s also a great eye opening shade. Annoyingly the colour isn’t on the pot, but if you look for the lilac shade on a No 7 stand I’m sure it would be the same one.

Finally lips. To me spring means one thing in terms of bold lips. It’s time to whack out the hot pink again. I love bright pinks for spring, so the Revlon Colour Burst Matte Balm in Unapologetic is perfect. As for more day to day looks, I like a nice coral or pinky nude, the Revlon Colour Burst Lip Butter in Juicy Papaya has been my go to colour recently, but the Revlon Colour Burst Lacquer Balm in Demure is also nice for quick and easy application in spring.

What are you spring picks for this year? Remember to stay tuned for my spring nails post in a few days!

Friday, 7 March 2014

The lovely Nikki from Floral Sundays tagged me to do this aaaaaages ago, so I'm sorry that it took me so long! Her blog is fab so make sure you check it out! I thought for the month of March, I'd do something a bit different and do a TAG every Friday so you guys get a bit more of an insight into me! Hope you enjoy!

1.What makes you want to blog?
I started blogging to give myself something to do that would fill up my spare time, but it's become a real passion of mine now and I do it because I like to think that a look I feature or a review I write will inspire someone.

      2.Your Morning skin routine?
I've been slacking a bit on the skincare front recently - naughty naughty - but when I can actually be bothered I stick to this routine.

3.Your favourite blogger?
This is a difficult one because I have so many that I read but I think it would have to be Anna from Vivianna Does Make Up, mainly because I feel like her personality really comes through in her writing. I did a post on my favourite bloggers not long ago, you can find it here.

      4.     A beauty product you couldn’t live without?
My Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, it's a life saver.

      5.     Your favorite make-up brand (drugstore)?
I think that one is a draw between Rimmel and Revlon. Love their stuff.

      6.     Your favourite make-up brand (High-end)?
I'm not the best advocate of high end make up (student and that) but I think my Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette is amazing so I'll go with them.

      7.     What is your staple wardrobe item?
Skinny Jeans and a statement necklace. You can't go wrong.

I tag everyone and anyone who wants to do this post, but make sure you comment so I can read it!

Vichy Idéalia BB Cream

Monday, 3 March 2014

Vichy Idéalia BB Cream - £21.00*
Vichy is a brand that I always hear a lot of from make up artists, especially the Dermablend range, and one that I have always been keen to try. I wanted to pick this up a few times and never got round to it, so when I finally got my hands on one I put it straight to work.

The Round Up - February

Sunday, 2 March 2014

Saturday, 1 March 2014

I don't usually post on Saturdays but I thought I would make a little exception for today. One year ago today I started posting on my little corner of the internet, and although it was consistent and then inconsistent and then consistent again, it is something I have come to be very proud of. I can remember the first day when 2 people read the first post, and gradually the views have gone up and it's become a little bit more popular.

I really have never been one of those people who wanted to do this for the freebies, it was a little place where I could go and contribute my thoughts to people who liked to read them. I hope the next year brings even more readers to Tiny Alis, and with moving to America and other exciting things coming up, there is no clue where it's going to take us!

P.S There may be a little giveaway coming up soon so make sure you stay tuned!

L'Oreal Miss Manga Mega Volume Mascara

Monday, 24 February 2014

L'Oreal Paris Miss Manga Mascara - £8.99

L'Oreal released their latest mascara offering a couple of weeks ago, which an awesome marketing campaign that had people itching to get their hands on the new release. Was it going to stand up against L'Oreal Telescopic and the other great mascaras in the range?

This product has had really mixed reviews. Some like the flexi wand, others don't. Some feel like it gives their lashes all the volume of a manga cartoon, others not so much. In terms of blogosphere, I know Lily Pebbles can't stand it but Alice from I Covet Thee featured it in her last favourites.

I personally have got on quite well with this mascara. It lengthens and separates my lashes as well as adding volume, but although I've enjoyed using it, there are definitely others out there that I prefer. On the whole, this mascara is okay, but I don't think I'll be repurchasing. I think that it's such a shame because L'Oreal obviously put a lot of effort into marketing it. However I look forward to other products for that range, I'm think maybe some cool eyeliners or fake lashes?

Have you tried the Manga Mascara?
